Ok, so even though I knew that April is Stress Awareness Month, I didn’t know about the Stress Management Society 30 day challenge. I've been looking to care more for my emotional wellbeing, so I’ve decided that even though I’m 10 days late to the party, I’m going to jump right in and join the challenge.
The challenge encourages you to pick one action each for your Physical, Mental and Emotional Wellbeing every day and that sounds like something I want to be a part of.
For a lot of people, work can be a very definite source of stress, so I’m going to be taking my breaks at work, and using them to complete the challenge.
First things first. The reason that the challenge is a 30 day challenge, is that it takes 30 days for activities to become habit. This might cause a problem (since I’m only just starting), but I plan to take the challenge forward into May to make sure that I complete my 30 days!
Day 1 (for me):
Happy Saturday! Today’s physical action was to go for a jog or a run. This felt a bit like jumping in at the deep end for me – I haven’t been doing much exercise recently due to some health problems, and it’s been a year since I’ve gone for a run. I decided that this was a great reason to incorporate the mental and emotional actions for today into the prep for the jog.
The Mental action was to challenge my thinking patterns – instead of thinking “I can’t do this” I thought “I can do hard things”. The Emotional action was to plan out my “what if” worries. This one was really helpful, and I realised I’d been letting my “what if” thoughts hold me back. “What if I can’t run for more than a few minutes?” turned into “If I struggle after a few minutes, then I’ll try again tomorrow – its still a start!”. So I took it easy, and went for a walk along the river, and broke into a slow jog for a few minutes when I felt ready. It felt great to get some exercise, and it felt even better knowing that I CAN do hard things, and that if I struggle, it isn’t the end of the world. I can’t wait for the next challenge!
For (possibly hilarious) footage of me completing today’s actions, head on over to our Instagram page, or follow us on TikTok (outshout2021) for my impromptu jog video. Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter and Facebook for updates on the challenge and to sign up to our newsletter to see my progress at the end of the 30 days!
